Car Insurance for Teenage Drivers

Insuring a teenage driver can be an expensive prospect. We'll give you tips on how to lower your teenager's premiums and keep him or her safe out on the road.

  • Help your teen learn the rules of the road and follow them consistently. The best way to lower your auto and car insurance costs for teenagers is to keep their driving record clean.
  • Be a good example. If you speed, tailgate, and scream at other drivers when you're driving, chances are your teen will, too. Teaching your teenager to obey traffic laws will be much easier if you walk the walk.
  • Sign them up for driver's ed. Most auto and car insurance companies offer a discount for teenage drivers that have completed an approved driver's education class. Make sure the school that you enroll your teen in is recognized by your insurer before you shell out the cash.
  • Create an incentive to get good grades. The good-student discount can save you a bundle when it comes to car and auto insurance for teens. You might consider passing on the savings to your teen as an incentive and a reward for getting good grades (at least a 3.0 GPA with most insurers).
  • Stay away from sporty vehicles. Sports cars and teenagers don't mix, and your auto and car insurance premiums will be through the roof if you try to combine the two. Sporty cars are more likely to be driven at high speeds, and they are more likely to be involved in collisions. You're better off getting your teen a safe car with the latest safety equipment.
